What's Hot in CF: NASA's Art Collection at Daytona Museum of Arts & Sciences

Image
If you stand at a certain spot at the   Daytona Beach Museum of Arts & Sciences , I'm told, you can see the skeleton of the prehistoric giant ground sloth behind you and a space suit that actually went to space ahead ahead of you.  That spot encapsulates the MOAS: some rich, thoughtful collections of items from Florida’s past and others that make us look excitedly towards the future with spiffy, unexpected pit stops along the way. It all makes  for a pretty terrific road trip.  The main event for us at MOAS (a Smithsonian affiliate) was the Florida Celebrates Space exhibit of NASA’s Art Collection which we had the pleasure of touring with Seth  Mayo, Curator of Astronomy at the Museum, who I interviewed for  What’s Hot in Central Florida on 90.7 FM WMFE (which you can hear on air at today 4:32 pm or click the link above to hear any time after noon today). Click the link and you can hear Seth talk about the origins of NASA getting artists to interpret the huge ev

What's Hot in CF: Two wrongs and a bunch of writers

SO much to do it was hard to pick What's Hot in Central Florida for 90.7 FM WMFE this weekend....I was tempted by the  Strawberry Festival in Plant City , which sounds lovely but went  for the slightly less sweet is Rhoda Penmark, the little psycho in The Bad Seed , now showing at the Breakthrough Theatre of Winter Park and wonderfully reviewed by Matt Palm in the Orlando Sentinel. More bad girls show up in Wicked the now-classic musical presented this weekend by Broadway Across America at the Bob Car Performing Arts Center.   The bunch of writers will be in Lake Helen tomorrow at the Lake Helen Authors Book Fair - more than 20 authors including multiple award winners will be on hand to talk about their work. Excellent stuff - buy local indeed!  See you out there!

They just keep going up! My wieners make the cover of "Jezebel"

I know  Stevie Wonder says that superstition ain't the way but I can't help it...I'm superstitious. I'm almost afraid to say "2013 has been a good year!" because I think the minute I do my car will get stolen again or a house will fall on my sister or some other evil whatnot. Actually things have been largely awesome since October 2012 and the latest installment of "Really? Neat!" is that my "9 Fascinating Penis Facts" story just made the COVER of Jezebel  where it's called A Penis Primer: 9 Fascinating Phallus Facts. " Those penises. They just keep on giving. And because I want you to believe it was on the cover (because it might change by the time you read this) here's a screen shot.     Anyway, I'm going to try it Stevie's way.....it's been a great few months and I see no reason the deliciousness shouldn't last from now til the end of the world. Yep, I'm late in writing this post - extremely so and my apologies for that! - but hopefully you saw the posts on Facebook and Twitter for the broadcast and so didn't miss it! I'm afraid it was the last weekend for Orpheus and Eurydice at UCF but check out their website for some of the great shows they have coming up AND you can still check out at least two of the events from What's Hot in CF on 90.7 FM including  Charlie Bethel's one-man show of The Odyssey at Orlando Shakespeare Theatre and The Bach Festival of Central Florida. While Titans in C was a one-time event there is another show on March 16, The Academy of St. Martin in the Field will be here playing Haydn and Bach at the Trinity Prep School Performing Arts Center.       There isn't anything quite like classical music performed live - seeing Titans in C  last night, which included works of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, conducted by the festival's musical director Dr. John Sinclair, was thrilling
