Well, they are and Andrew Shaffer gives us the juicy stuff our teachers didn't in Great Philosophers Who Failed at Love, which I happily reported on this week in SexCult: I love therefore I'm nuts. We get a peek inside the private lives lives of great Western thinkers from St. Augustine to Jean-Paul Sartre, from Ayn Rand to Albert Camus and most of them prove that when it comes to love you might as well give your brain some cruise tickets til you're done because it won't be working anyway. An excellent read - and a comforting one.

The past few days have been busy ones on Sex Feed....we had Britain allows abortion clinics to advertise on TV and President Obama vows to protect women's reproductive rights. alongside a goofy story about a School that board doesn't want to use the name "Cougars" in case human cougars get mad.....Friday of course we had some fun with Newt bringing open marriage to the campaign trail....and my personal favorite of the week Ottawa library system allows you to check out a human being for 20 minutes. Well, there's no better way to learn something than just asking someone, is there?

Catching up with a few pieces there was a scary story about outing the homophobia in Scientology but my all time favorite was Stephen Hawking deems women a 'complete mystery.'

What's Hot in Central Florida! Sweets, surrealism and slammable phones!

This is the first week I've managed to totally shed the post-holiday-season blues, largely thanks in part to a last weekend's full calendar of events, which were great fun and which I'll post about later. In the meantime on What's Hot in Central Florida I can't even wait to go to the very first Florida Key Lime Pie Festival! And I can't believe what a beautiful weekend we're going to have in January to make a beach trip sound so appetizing. Pie...of course....is always a draw but they're also going to have tiki carving, key lime margarita and martinis and lots and lots of other stuff. I think it'll be like a little taste of the Keys without having to drive eight hours to get to that atmosphere!

Also up this weekend at Twelve 21 Gallery in Orlando featuring work by Eric Althin, Scott Donald, Johannah O'Donnel and Steve Parker- click the link to see a video trailer for the show which is full of beautiful, whimsical and satisfyingly transporting images. As everyone knows reality and I are not on speaking terms and the magical, surrealist visions in this groups show are a sure bet.

Finally...WANT! I don't know if the phone below will actually be at the Antique Telephone and Insulator Show (the best description/contact info for which is here at the Orlando Sentinel's website) at the Maitland Civic Center on Saturday - but oh my god, what an object of desire! There will be dealers from all over the country bringing us back to the days when you had to actually sit/stand in one place to make a call and, when not everyone could get hold of you 24/7 (remember the joyful power of just letting the damn phone ring without having the responsibility for returning messages because you couldn't get messages?). It's super nerdy, I know but it sounds swell to me!

Anyway, whatever you do this weekend it's going to be a beautiful one so get out there and enjoy it!

Sex Feed: Advice from French women and Mongolian dinosaurs

Today...well, now yesterday...on Sex Feed we got some terrific advice terrific advice vis-a-vis sex from French women via The Stir and even better advice from the tale of some idiot in a North Carolina jail who hit a gun up his heinie.

Meanwhile, back in the early part of the year, we had Weak breast implants filled with fuel additive....medical staffs get new recommendations for treating transgender patients....does Lego need to make a separate set of Legos for girls?....the Museum of London features an ancient coin depicting sex positions....will the world's tallest transvestite please stand up? and my favorite, mostly for the pictures...French kissing dinosaur statues in Mongolian theme park. Seriously....does this make anyone else want to go on a road trip to see all those roadside attractions that are going to close any minute now that you don't want to miss? Anybody?

Donorsexual. It's always fun when a new sexual term is coined but I'm not sure that's one we're going to be using much unless we're talking about Trent Arsenault, a 36 year-old man who has never had sex but has fathered 14 kids by donating sperm for free to childless couples. We think he read the instructions upside down...sex is nature's way of tricking people into having kids. Having kids without sex is like having the hangover without the fun the night before.

Speaking of kids, LGBT parents are just as good as straight parents in just about any study you want to look at plus, it turns out, they might actually do a better job of raising kids in an open-minded, more accepting environment so they won't grow up to be a bunch of Santorums. We like that plan.

SexCult: Dating: Dealing with Crazy

A few weeks ago a story came out about a man who, having been silently rejected by a woman after one date - she simply never replied to any of his texts or calls - wrote her an email of 1615 words. The email went viral, like a bullied girl's diary might be circulated by Mean Girls. It raised a lot of questions in my mind, like what's so difficult about politely declining instead of staying icily silent, what constitutes sending someone too many texts and emails when they are clearly trying to send you a message by not responding and is there no better way than to deal with either one than to turn a global information network into a fourth grade classroom? That was my topic in a recent SexCult: Dating: Dealing with Crazy, and it was one I'm particularly proud of. Enjoy!

So yes, I've slacked on blogging a bit, mostly since I sliced into my thumb while cooking and want to keep typing, among other things, at a minimum. Cooking is dangerous. I'll never attempt it again.

BUT the Sex Feed must go on! In the past few days we've had...Mother-Daughter Lingerie models a French town bans the word 'Madamoiselle' as sexist on it's paperwork....an intern at the Trevor project who commited suicide....a sex toy company finds new uses for Sonicare motor...and the dumbbell award to guy who got the penis tattoo, causing him to have a semi-permanant erection.
And then there's my favorite: Ostriches can become attracted to humans.

What's Hot in Central Florida

There's so much to do this weekend in CF that your own house should look like unfamiliar territory to you by the time it's all over. One of my personal favorites, the Scottish Highland Games opens tonight with a few events like a whisky tasting, but the main events, like the sheep dog demonstrations, the caber toss (burly men flinging telephone poles around like they were pretzel sticks) and folk and highland dancing will be going on for the rest of the weekend (we're told we may have an opportunity to try haggis, and we use the word 'opportunity' generously).

Next up the Orlando Science Center presents Otronicon, it's four-day expo of all kinds of interactive technology including workshops and experiences in medical technology, military tech and Rock Band Experience, with real concert lights and sounds (I'll be squirreled away in the Reboot Lounge myself, playing the video games that were popular when I was a kid, not quite a hundred years ago but when the word "joystick" was still in use and humorous.

Finally when I saw the photographs of Atelier: The Work of Edson Campos online I very much wanted to include the exhibition on the list and you can see why in the image below. Strangely ethereal and surreal but with a vivacity and almost hyper-liveliness, I'm looking forward to seeing this one myself as well. When I went to the Mount Dora Center for the Arts website (the link above) just prior to posting this it was momentarily down; just in case there are technical difficulties, this link might work a bit better; if not, the number for the Center is (352) 383-0880. There's a reception tonight from 6-8pm and tonight is also the Mount Dora Arts stroll, a free event - you can pick up maps with participating locations in various spots in downtown Mount Dora. and for more information on the exhibit check out the Orlando Sentinel write-up here.

Sex Feed: Gay divorce legislation, sex toys for military wives and Girl Scouts welcome transgender kids

In Sex Feed yesterday we had a sex toy company altruistically trying to help military couples out by bringing teledildonics (that's remote control sex) to military wives, plus, before most states have even legalized gay marriage D.C. is introducing legilsation to help same-sex couples divorce more easily.

Going back into the archives - but just a little ways - Go Canada! Canadian scientists develop first HIV vaccine approved for human trial, a lady convicted of having sex for World Series tickets had her conviction overturned causing an interesting pause for thought about what exactly counts as prostitution....the Lesbian sailor who won love's first kiss at homecoming.....Newt Gingrich telling gays to vote for Obama.....Colorado Girl Scouts welcome transgender girl while their counterpart Scout leaders in Louisiana acted like, well, like 7 year-old girls about it. Way to go Colorado GS! You deserve a merit badge for sure.

The Winner: Little Miss Parliament House

Great satire doesn’t just make it’s target look horrifying or ridiculous - by the time something is being satirized it’s been seen that way already. Great satire makes you realize that the target is a dozen times worse than you’d ever imagined it was before you sat down.

Before seeing “Little Miss Parliament House,” Orlando comedian Jeff Jones’ send-up of child beauty pageants ala “Toddlers and Tiaras,” we all knew child pagaents were disturbing. We all know that. But nothing could have underscored the weirdness of sticking little girl kids in Tammy Faye make-up and coaching them to move with all the child-like exhuberance of Abe Lincoln in the Hall of Presidents than having 40-50 something drag queens satirize them doing it.

“Little Miss Parliament House,” will make your face ache from laughing, too. It’s a blend of theater, improv and mixed-media with pre-taped interviews of the contestants’ “mothers” and of Jones as the cloying, closeted pageant emcee with Janine Klein as his deliciously disenchanted wife. Doug White, as the pageant assistant, rounds out the stable cast, which which brings us to another inspired aspect of the show - a rotating cast of contestants so the show is always different. Only the “talent” portion is pre-arranged, so the result is a hilarious free-for-allwith a quick-witted cast that does better on the fly than many do with a script.

The opening night cast included Addison Taylor and Carol Lee who play girls so marvelously tragic and familiar that you just want to adopt them or show them an “It gets better” video - something - and Ginger Minj and Chantal Reshae playing girls whoso disconcertingly adult that they make you feel like one of the first two. Future contestants will include Miss Sammy, Gidget Galore, Doug Ba’aser and April Fresh.

So go see “Little Miss Parliament House” - it’s not only hilarious and great satire, but it delivers something real raelity TV seldom does - entertainment, surprises and something to look forward to. It’s been awhile since I’ve been so happy to be totally horrified.

Orlando is the 2nd Gayest City in the U.S. & Catching up with Sex Feed

Last year when Orlando was voted the fourth gayest city in America by The Advocate I swore we'd get the first place tiara....well, I was only off by one place and that ain't bad. Orlando came in 2nd this year but the surprise of the century....was that the Advocate's choice for the gayest city in America is...well, you'll just have to click on the link, won'tcha?

So that and an Israeli gynecological conference that won't allow women to speak were the stories on today's Sex Feed but going back into the archives a bit we have...how legalizing same-sex marriage improves LGBT health....a mother-toddler group banned from making the 'diamond' symbol in Twinkle Twinkle little star because it's dirty....coercive group sex on the rise among teens.....and a Mississippi mayor whose misappropriation of funds helped him get out of the closet (it helped when it was discovered where he was spending it).

Catching up with Sex Feed

Jeez. Ever feel like the time train has left the station and there you are on the platform in your bathrobe with your cup of coffee just waking up and thinking "What the F? Are we moving along already?"

I started playing catch-up with my Sex Feed posts for SeXis magazine - which I was writing 12 of a week for awhile there - just before New Year's. The holidays very very happily distracted me from the cares of the world and there were a lot of them for women in mid-December, including a report showing that 20% of women have been sexual assault victims and a fraternity's "who would you rape" survey (and people wonder why 'frat boy' is a slur). No wonder Hotels for Women Only have become a travel trend.

There was some comedy, though, including Paul Rudnick's All-New Kinsey Scale in which the writer takes the Kinsey sexuality criteria, - i.e., how straight are you, how gay are you? - and expands it just a smidge to include references to Mandy Pantankin and museums. Also much-loved was the billboard of the Virgin Mary looking at her pregnancy test results. And one that was scary/funny: Pilates move causes breast implant to lodge in woman's rib cage. It's 1 pm. Do you know where your boobs are?

What's Hot In Central Florida

I've had the post-holiday blues this week....between Christmas and New Year's but I saw about 100 people I love, ate, drank and slept well and wish all of life could be like the dying days of 2011. That year that brought some spiffy things... my book and the events surrounding it, getting to go to work for WMFE 90.7 FM and an extended stay in beautiful Victoria BC.
There were other parts of the year that stunk like a fish market dumpster in August. Watching it slink into oblivion while drinking champagne with people I love was all you could want of comfort and joy.
Plus, there's a long list of things to look forward to in 2012. I'll be talking about them in What's Hot in Central Florida on WMFE 90.7, aevery Friday at 4:32 PM starting with some spectacular live funk music (and who can be sad when that's on?) at Plaza Live Orlando when Galactic plays tonight - click the link and listen to "Hey Na Na" and you'll see what I mean. They're there with Toubab Krewe and both are bound to kick off 2012 in style.
Saturday and Sunday is the Deland Rail Fair and Model Train Show and I have no doubt there are enough people who go bonkers over all things choo-choo - I know some of them - that this will be a ticket to happiness for many.
Finally, Orlando comic Jeff Jones will give you your first real belly laughs of the year with Little Miss Parliament House, a show he wrote and emcees, satirizing Toddlers and Tiaras and other kiddie pageant nightmares with your favorite Footlights female impersonators playing both the little stars and their white trash moms. I've never see a show at the Footlights Theater that didn't leave me with a stomach ache from laughing, so I know this will be a great bet.
Anyways, I'll see you out there! I'll be the one with the champagne.

SexCult: The Fictional Characters That Turn You On

It started with my reading about a project called "Fucking James Franco," wherein people would write erotic fan fiction about, guess what? Yep, adult encounters with James Franco. I've never read very much Real Personal Slash (RPS) fiction...in fact I don't think I've ever read any, though slash fiction about fictional people, well that's another story. That's entertainment! Sometimes. At any rate I asked you what fictional character you'd like to get it on with and you responded right here in SexCult: Fucking James Franco and the Fictional Characters You Love...Really Really Love. Not to give too much away but guess who came out on top, so to speak?

Sex Feed: Oscar Wilde, condom marketing and smoking could make your nipples fall off

Early December brought my favorite headlines of all time: Smoking might make your nipples fall off (if only the Weekly World News were still on the stands...sniff).
Less bizarre was the Hands-on sex college opening in Austria, far, far weirder was a Condom marketing campaign sends men messages fromfuture sons Ookiest: Man calls hooker and his daughter shows up....Deputy interrupts bondage fantasy was entertaining but this will make you check what century you're in: Overt racism in KY Baptist church. Big surprise: Sex-related allegations helped drive Cain out of GOP race (but at least he left with that weird Pokemon quote).
Scarily, AIDS still often untreated, diagnosed, even in the US, also Saudi scholars: Women driving cars would be end of virginity (no 'scholars' is not used sarcastically there), Topless protestors in Kiev oppose sex tourism and a false worry flurry: Teens sexting? Not so much

My favorite? Kisses from adoring fans Erode Oscar Wilde monument. I'd say that I'd like to be so beloved that my tombstone to be covered with kisses one day but then again, why let my tombstone have all the fun? I want as many kisses as I can get while I'm alive to enjoy them.

I had a great time and it was really fun to get to talk to readers on such a direct level, to answer questions and to hear the parts that people were most interested in. I'm very gratified that people liked the stories as much as the science (I do, too...can you tell?) :)

What did you have to be thankful for?

In catching up with Sex Feed I realized thatlate November had some fun stories in it, stories that make me thankful that, while I have to wade through the bad news the world coughs up at least I get to concentrate on a lot of fun things......like Cocksox, a bra for penises and a penis so big you can only see it from a plane ..like Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis making Marine dreams come true...and a Gay wedding for Archie comics.

The WTF section included the World's Heaviest Woman resuming her hot sex life!, making many people wonder "And I'm not getting any? Not to mention the fact that disembodied spirits - Ghost sex: Suddenly it's everywhere! - may be getting more than some of us with perfectly good, corporeal parts.

Best weird story of late November: Biblical Lego sex. Don't ask. Just click. (picture from "Sodom and Gomorrah" section of "The Brick Testament")

Sad news came with the death of Ken Russell, who gave us sexual imagery we'll never forget, tedious "Oh, you again," news came with the announcement of Herman Cain's alleged affair.....crazy news arrived in the form of an eavesdropping husband, tries to strangle wife...intriguing political alliances found their way into the news with Stripping protests in the Middle East...depressing news out of Egypt with Journalist in Cairo describes beating, sexual assault...a strange story that at least contains the phrase "bacteria-riddled afterbirth," because you don't have enough of that in your life: Birth control for bison could, oddly, lead to more births....somewhat heartening news that Worldwide, number of AIDS cases hits plateau...a bizarre and frightening story out of Africa Gangs of women raping men in Zimbabwe? and an intriguing one out of Scandanavia: Swiss vote on publicly funded red light district

And finally, neurology confirms something we guessed - that your brain is more lively when other people are naked: Your brain works faster with nude bodies.

More Radio Days

Despite high temperatures and low funds the holiday spirit seems to be more robust than it has been in years and there's still lots of holiday entertainment to enjoy. This week on WMFE 90's What's Hot in Central Florida like The Messiah at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke this evening, Pinnochio's Marionette Theater performing "The Little Drummer Boy," and Chanukah in the Park on Park Avenue this Sunday.

Also, whether you're home prepping for holidays tomorrow or out and about getting last errands done I hope you'll listen for me from 3-4pm on 810 AM's Out N About radio show, Orlando's first gay-themed live radio broadcast (click the link to listen live online). L.A. Talk Radio: Good Clean Love with Wendy Strgar

Had a totally wonderful time being on L.A. Talk Radio yesterday, on "Lunchtime with the Loveologist" with Wendy Strgar, author, talk show host and excellent interviewer! I have to admit, when I first saw the show title, "Good Clean Love," I thought "Uh-oh...is this going to be super G-rated?" but no, no, no, the "good, clean" part is about the organic products on Wendy's website and she is all about "sustainable" relationships: how to take the wisdom of using "current resources in a way that does not harm the future," and apply that to love. Brilliant.
Wendy and I talked about Crazy Little Thing: Why Love and Sex Drive Us Mad and she had many compassionate insights into the universality of crazy love and how difficult it can be when our hearts grab the wheel from our heads. It was a pleasure to talk to her (and it never hurts for someone to tell an author 'I couldn't put your book down!')

"Crazy Little Thing" is making me Radio Ga-Ga.

Not only do I get to be on our NPR affiliate WMFE 90.7 FM every Friday, but I'm getting to do lots of radio interviews for "Crazy Little Thing: Why Love and Sex Drive Us Mad," lately, the most recent with Dagni Rose on "The Wild O" podcast. Dagni and I talked about the role of chemistry in love and sex but also about some of the psychological reasons why some people gravitate towards the same type of people over and over again (while others are good at finding different paths to lunacy).

My favorite part, though, is talking about the people I interviewed and sometimes traveled to talk to, like our trip to Gibsonton, Florida, sometimes called "Freaktown," for it's illustrious history as a seasonal home for side show performers. In Gibsonton we popped at the Showtown bar for a quick one and snapped this painting, a "demon bartender with metallic blood-red eyes who looks like he's glad he showed up so he can eat your esophagus."

THAT kind of thing is a good reason to buy this book, whether you have problems in love or not.

"A Tuna Christmas" at Orlando Shakespeare Center

The holidays can be stressful enough to give anyone holly jolly heart attack. You barely have time to buy the damn presents, make the damn cookies and decorate the damn tree, I know. But do yourself a favor and set aside an evening to see A Tuna Christmas at Orlando Shakespeare Center before it closes on Dec. 30. The laughs will undo your holiday stress as well as a cup of decently spiked egg nog.

Michael Kevin Baldwin and Mark Lanier play 24 of the citizens of the tiny town of Tuna, Texas (which might as well be any number of small towns in Florida, so you know these people). Considering the speed of the quick changes they make switching from part to part the play could have billed this as a magic show in addition to a brilliant comedy. 'Tuna Christams is a sequal to Greater Tuna, both written by Ed Howard, Joe Sears and Jaston Williams and is so tightly written, though, that you barely have time to think "How did they do that?" The laughs come as if fired out of one of DiDi's Used Weapons (one of my personal favorite of the show's character menagerie).

So give yourself a night off, see the show and have a happier holiday.

What's hot in Central Florida this weekend is everything cold, including cold-blooded reptiles at the premiere show Repticon, disenchanted Disney princesses in the musical Disnechanted: Bitches of the Kingdom and Ice! and Snow! at Gaylord Palms with 130 tons of real snow that's amazingly kept at a bearable 55 degrees! Personally I like a little atmosphere for the holidays and since the temperature has been a little warm for the season hopefully some of these cooler events - plus the fact that people seem to really to be in the spirit this year even though they are, as Dolly Parton once astutely said, busier than a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest, will lift your holiday spirits. Cheers!

Very excited to report that one of my Sex Feed posts got a mention in The Week! I've often used The week as a place to find intriguing stories and am glad they thought they found one from me Whee!!!

A long time ago when I wrote for Glamour magazine I got an assignment to write about "Sexual Selections: What We Can And Can't Learn About Sex From Animals," and interview the author, Marlene Zuk, a biology professor at UC Davis. It's the kind of assignment where you could ask "So....what can and can't we learn about sex from animals?" as though you were boned-up on the subject without actually reading the book, but I did read it, avidly, and loved the way Dr. Zuk made her scientific subject so approachable, like you were just chatting and she'd been meaning to tell you how frequently we misconstrue animal behavior because we're so prone to looking at animals through the filter of our own behavior.

I've interviewed Marlene several times since, including for my own book Crazy Little Thing: Why Love and Sex Drive Us Mad and recently wrote my column in SeXis magazine about her most recent work Sex on Six Legs: Lessons on Life, Love and Language from the Insect World. Party Pics! Book signing in Orlando / readings in NYC

FINALLY! My book Crazy Little Thing: Why Love and Sex Drive Us Mad, from Cleis Press / Viva Editions was released on Dec. 1 in bookstores and also on Barnes & Noble's Nook and on Amazon's Kindle and on the same day my good friends at RhodeHaus Productions put on a party at Sip Orlando.

Tparty couldn't have gone any better. Not only did I completely sell out of books but I got to meet a lot of new people, see a lot of people I hadn't seen in a long time and to really enjoy the fact that after all the months of work and waiting people could finally hold it in their hands (or download it onto their respective devices) and enjoy it, which I suspect they are...I was told about one woman who called in late to work the next morning because she didn't want to put it down.

(the book line; about two hours into the three hour event we ran out. The lady in the leopard coat was the last one who had the opportunity to get a copy.

Sip couldn't have been better to us and I had the good fortune to have Orlando's legendary performer Sam Singhaus DJing for me (yes, he played tons of Queen at my request) and all told I don't think I could have asked for a better event so thank you to all those who came out!

Who says you're never as appreciated in your home town as you are elsewhere?

But it's nice to be appreciate elsewhere, too, especially when that elsewhere is Manhattan, where I actually got to debut the book at the wonderful and historic Bluestockings Bookstore, Cafe and Activist Center. Despite the icy cold rain we had a nice crowd, sold books and I got introduced to the terrific staff at Bluestockings, a comfortable and definitely well-stocked (floor to ceiling) and welcoming store on NYC's lower East Side. Thanks to Lee and the rest of the terrific staff and everyone who came out! (and to Lu Chekowsky for taking pics)

The next night I got to speak at the Chat Lounge via Tied Up Events which was a waaaaay more relaxed evening than I'd anticipated, especially after the organizers at Tied Up, Dee "Dive" Dennis and Tess Denasi told me I'd be talking for about two hours....I prepared like I was taking the final exam of my life! Thankfully it was a lot more laid back than I thought it would be.

Tess and Diva were wonderfully welcoming, which was especially nice since it had been a day that saw pockets of mayhem in the city. Mayor Bloomberg having booted the Occupy Wall Street crowd out of Zuccotti Park the morning I flew in. Two hundred people were arrested on the day my event was to take place downtown on Broome St. and OWS was rumored as threatening to delay the subways and block the Brooklyn Bridge. New York One news footage as I left my digs on the upper west side showed them marching towards downtown. Great. That'll show all those billionaires who take the subway or drive home to Brooklyn, right? Idiots.

When I found out people weren't going to come that night because they were concerned - understandably so - that this might cause problems getting home I damned near turned Republican.

With that in mind I was especially grateful to those who did brave both those circumstances and the wet cold to make it out that night and, as one of the 99%, I was also really happy to sell some books!

True to the name of the event we did have a lot of really nice chat and I was so pleased to get to debut "Crazy" in NYC - twice (Photos by - and with - Bethy Estrella).

From there I had a reading at Books Inc Bookstore and Cafe on December 19, and I have to say that this is far and away the most expansive used bookstore I've been to in a long, long time - an unbelievably array of titles reasonably priced - and strangely enough the first one I picked up was "The Scarsdale Diet," by Dr. Herman Tarnower, who was shot by his long-time girlfriend Jean Harris in one of the most famous and notorious criminal cases of the 1980's. I'd written to Jean Harris early on in my quest for interviewees for "Crazy Little Thing," but never got a response and frankly I can understand why. It's not really that surprising when people don't want to open up about the lowest ebb or worst trauma of their lives which makes it that much more gratifying that so many people did grant me that kind of access.

Goodbye, Ken Russell

A couple of years ago I had the honor of meeting Ken Russell when he and his wife Lisi came to the Florida Film Festival for a screening of Crimes of Passion, written by my pal, Orlando's own Barry Sandler. At the time I was a blogger for Fairvilla Megastore, the local treasure / adult boutique on Orange Blossom Trail and thought that, considering Mr. Russell's exceptional gift for bringing wild, hysterical, bizarre, alarming, jaw-dropping, tingling-in-all-the-right-places-especially-your-brain sexual imagery to the screen, he'd be the perfect person to comment on some of the adult novelties I blogged about. In fact his first full biography is called Phallic Frenzy: Ken Russell and his Films.

So when I got to meet the great director - a genius, as Martin Scorsese and Ben Kingsley will tell you - I casually threw out "You should come to my store," thinking I would get the celebrity brush off, i.e., that he'd say "Oh, that's nice, but we don't have time."

"You have a store?" he asked instead.. and that question lead to my getting to do one of the coolest things I've ever done, which was, with the aid of my wonderful videographer Matt Reyes, share a penis pinata, some fetish shoes and a vibrator the size of a muffler with Ken Russell (that's Lisi, Matt, Ken and me, below).

If you're reading this you're probably a fan and know why anyone would be - watching a Ken Russell movie is like being in a dream that's a thousand times cooler than any you might have. In fact, scenes like the one in Gothic where Claire's nipples turn into eyes, Amanda Donaho making various sacrifices to her snake god and of course Ann-Margaret wallowing in suds, beans and chocolate

could potentially open up your mind to possibilities you literally never dreamed of.

There was so much more than this to love about Ken Russell....his combination religious and sexual imagery, his risk-taking (I had never seen Nazi fetish wear before Mahler), his unabashed love for his subjects....it all added up to a cinematic experience profoundly unlike any other and all for the good.

In fact, looking back after more than 20 years of being a Ken Russell fan I think I can say that his look on the power, absurdity, humor and immense importance of sexuality probably influenced me more than I realized and it's an influence that, as a 20-something writer, I was really lucky to have.Ken Russell died yesterday at the age of 84 and while you'll read a dozen tributes in the next few days I wanted to kick in my little piece about bringing Ken and Lisi to the store, which I'm so grateful for. They were wonderfully good sports, especially since they'd been traipsing around the Holy Land Experience all day when their assistant here in Orlando, Chrsitine Robison, brought them to us at the store. Still, they good-humoredly had fun with us, stuck around, looked around and agreed to a little video, which you'll see below. As of this writing it's getting stuck a bit around the second minute or so but I hope you'll get to see it through to the end...you haven't seen the true potential of a fetish shoe until you've seen Ken Russell lick one, which, if memory serves, he did.

Or it might have been a dream after watching one of his films.

BOOK PARTY ON THURSDAY!

As some of you know I worked very hard throughout 2010 and a good chunk of 2011 to write a book, Crazy Little Thing: Why Love and Sex Drive Us Mad. It's about the extremes we sometimes go to in love, how it makes us all feel crazy, some people who had really crazy times with it and some of the chemical and psychological reasons that love makes LSD look like Ovaltine.

I was honored to have the book debut at Bluestockings Bookstore in Manhattan and then another event at the Chat Lounge on Broome St. the next night and now I finally get to celebrate on my home turf here in Orlando.

RhodeHaus productions has put a party together for me at SIP, 724 Virginia Drive, Orlando, 7-10pm, no cover. Sam Singhaus will be DJ-ing and performing so you know the music will be the best.

If you've already pre-ordered a book and bring it with I'll be happy to sign it and I'll also have some copies available to buy (at the $20 book cover price). Four in the top 25

There's something about not getting a chance to celebrate your birthday (which I didn't) that seems to mean you get to celebrate a dozen or so other things that happen after your birthday, like this one - I didn't realize until I was browsing SeXis this weekend that I had four stories in their Top 25 stories for October, including one on The Scar Project, photographer David Jay's fantastic portraits of breast cancer survivors, SexCult: Spectrophilia about sex with ghosts, SexCult: Is He a Sex Addict or Isn't He? about Phil Varone going on Dr. Drew's show for sex addiction...and then coming out with a line of porn products, among other things, and finally Sex While Sky Diving Totally Worth Getting Fired For about...well, you can figure that out.

What's Hot in CF - LOTS including my book party!

There are so many things coming up that it was tough to chose what to talk about on What's Hot in Central Florida today on WMFE 90.7 FM at 4:32 pm (you can check out the podcast if you miss it) but I think I got some great ones in there. On Saturday there's PURE Reflections: Beauty Reimagined, an international showcase of dancers from PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment) dance troupes everywhere, exploring issues of body image through dance. Sunday afternoon promises Hanging of the Greens ensemble harp concert at the Broadway United Methodist Church downtown and on Sunday night Will's Pub's Sick of it Sunday will feature Black Flag karaoke - where you can shout out the lyrics of your favorite Black Flag songs backed by a live band.

I have to give a special mention to Michael Wanzie's A Christmas Carol, opening Saturday night at the Footlights Theater featuring everyone's favorite female impersonators rocking the Dickens classic as Carol Channing, Marlee Matlin, Miss Piggy and many, many more. It's a pants-wettingly funny show guaranteed to make the worst Scrooge giggle like a school girl.

Finally, not this weekend but on THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1, RhodeHaus productions has put together a book launch party for Crazy Little Thing: Why Love and Sex Drive Us Mad. It's about the extremes we sometimes go to in love, how it makes us all feel crazy, some people who had really crazy times with it and some of the chemical and psychological reasons that love makes LSD look like Ovaltine. D'oh! I missed posting on What's Hot in Central Florida on WMFE, 90.7 FM earlier today but there are still some great events to be attended in Orlando this weekend, like the Southern Pinball Festival that's running all weekend at the Maitland Civic Center with games of all kinds from all eras, set on freeplay with your ticket purchase! There's also A Woman Scorned: The Hannya Mask Project at Twelve21 Gallery, celebrating the Hannya Mask of the Japanese Noh theater which represents a jealous or vengeful woman whose anger has turned her into a demon - but who still has traces of humanity left (I know her...wait, I've been her!). That opens Saturday, Nov. 19 - more details on the above link and at Ascension Custom Dermagraphics.
By the time I post this Southern Culture on the Skids will almost have started playing at The Social, which is too bad because I LOVE that band!!!!! And I hope lots and lots and lots of you get to go see them. My apologies for missing out on posting earlier - you can still hear the podcost on the 90.7 link above - it's been a traveling week so I plead jet lag (despite not having left my time zone).

What's Hot in CF! Peter Murphy, parades and my birthday

Kurt Vonnegut was born on this day, 11/11, only in 1922 and while it's not actually a Central Florida event it's still a noteworthy one. I'd tell everyone to read Welcome to the Monkey House this weekend, but then you'd miss the fun stuff coming up in What's Hot in Central Florida on WMFE, 90.7 FM at 4:32 pm which includes, not one, but TWO parades! There's the Veteran's Day Parade in downtown Orlando on Saturday and also the rescheduling of Come Out With Pride's Pride Day events which got rained out a couple of weeks ago. AND Peter Murphy (or, as I once referred to him after I'd had a few, Purty Meefur) is going to be at Firestone tonight, so the reading assignment will have to wait.
One assignment that won't wait, though....my birthday is on Sunday. I'd recommend cake and champagne but you celebrate as you see fit. XOXOX!!

Fishbone fans are going to be thrilled this weekend with TWO opportunities to see the legendary band, the first at Enzian, which will be showing the documentary "Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone," and later the band will play downtown at The Social.

Playfest! The Harriest Lake Festival of New Plays will be going on all weekend at the Orlando Shakespeare Theater - there's a packed schedule and some of the events are free.
Finally the 25th Annual AIA (American Indian Association) Orlando Powwow is going to be at the Central Florida Fairgrounds this weekend with Native American music, dance and food. There was a call on their website for "former Powwow princesses," who will be honored at a ceremony starting at 3:45 pm. The whole event sound like a great chance to explore a lot of aspects of a culture we want to see more of.

Ghost Sex Update!

Last week in SexCult: Spectrophilia on SeXis I got the skinny from author and metaphysical expert Rosemary Guiley about ghost sex - people returning to the temporal world to get busy.

Today a woman in Ohio claims her 4 year-old granddaughter snapped a picture of two ghosts having sex.

I'm still dubious. But the video is very funny and worth a gander. And who knows? Wouldn't sex have to be one of the things worth coming back for?

There was so much going on this weekend it was really difficult to choose what to talk about but no question, the Halloween celebration in Cassadaga with it's promise of potentially seeing the devil in the spooky "Devil's Chair" (if not the one in the graveyard, who knows? maybe he'll turn up in the replica) was a shoe-in. There's a ton of things going on but no one else even hinted the devil might show up at their event. Gotta give it up for Cassadaga.

     After going to one of the Edgar Allan Poe events at the Orlando Public Library this month and loving it I had to share that Mad Cow Theater is doinga show based on Poe's works at the library tomorrow at 2pm.
The Poe artwork, by the way, is a watercolor by Marilyn Manson.
Finally Gloria Steinem is speaking at Rollins twice this weekend, Friday night and Saturday afternoon - not a Halloween event, but one I'm positive listeners would want to know about because I'm a listener and I'd want to know.
     One other thing - I mentioned Enzian's Haunted Swamp Walk of Terror a few weeks back and this weekend Enzian is showing the Disney classic The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad at 1pm on Sunday. This is one of my all-time favorite animated / Halloween / general films - I had the record as a kid (which is slightly different from the song in the film; it's sung by Thurl Ravenscroft, who also voiced "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch"; in the film it's Bing Crosby). I cannot WAIT to see one of my all-time favorites on a big screen.

SexCult: Things that Go Hump in the Night

So I started the quest to find something romantic the holiday that's supposed to be based on fear. It's true that a good Halloween fright can get your heart racing the same way arousal can but honestly, I'm not looking for the same thing in my horror film favorites, like "The Others," "Psycho," and yes, "Basket Case," as I am in a close encounter of the intimate kind.

Some people, though, have mixed their sexy time and their spooky time by having sex - or at least saying or thinking they've had sex - with disembodied ghosts. This week in SexCult: Spectrophilia on SeXis I got the skinny from author and metaphysical expert Rosemary Guiley about the phenomena of people combining the sensual and temporal worlds.
Bet they have a really happy Halloween....

"Crazy Little Thing" excerpted on Alternet

Thank you Alternet for putting up an excerpt of my upcoming book, Crazy Little Thing: Why Love and Sex Drive Us Mad! This chapter is about the nature of attraction and features my friend and one of my favorite authors and speakers, Sheri Winston talking about some of the reasons our attractions - and lack of them - can be baffling, to us and those around us.
Sheri does a wonderful job articulating the confounding nature of attraction but there's also a narrative part of the chapter, which you'll hopefully be able to read in just a few weeks. This includes an interview with Ward Hall, a veteran carnival barker from Gibsonton, Florida who told Sam & I tales of love and intrigue in the sideshow, like the love story of the alligator-skinned man and the monkey girl and the golden age of Gibsonton when the "human oddities" of the carnival circuit wintered in that little tropical Camelot.

It was my privilege to interview fashion photographer David Jay whose remarkable undertaking "The Scar Project," has literally changed the way many of us look at breast cancer. Jay photographed breast cancer survivors and asked for their stories and his stark, elegant, powerful black and white photographs give us a look at the disease and those who have lived with it that vividly supports the project's tagline "Breast Cancer is Not a Pink Ribbon." An excellent CF weekend

"I'd cut off my thumbs if I thought it was trendy," one of my friends once said to me and while I'm not quite that devoted I at least like to feel like I have an idea of what's in with the in crowd. Vampires are a trend I've been missing out on, surprisingly, too, because their dress sense, preference for the night and carnivorism are all things I approve of and share (except the dress sense).
This weekend I got in on the Vampire's Ball, a production of the Orlando Ballet featuring vignettes choreographed by artistic director Robert Hill and I feel I've finally gotten the vampire fix I need. Twilight? Feh. This was so much better. The vignettes were engaging and surprising, the costumes were envy-inspiring and the dancers divine - how they do what they do is amazing enough (I don't think I've ever seen this many beautiful people outside of E! TV) but some of them did it in capes, no less - spectacular.
I enjoyed so much I was kind of sad when it was over, like those people who went to see Avatar and then found real life to be a pretty tiresome by comparison. Hopefully Vampire's Ball will return next year - in the meantime at least there's one more week to enjoy every macabre thing Halloween has to offer.

This past weekend I also got to hang out with the folks of Out N About Radio on 810 AM, hosted by Paul Karle, with Whitney Hogan, Randy Stephens of The Center and my pal Tom Dyer editor and publisher at Watermark Media and had a BLAST talking about my new book Crazy Little Thing: Why Love and Sex Drive Us Mad. It was an excellent show (and also featured Daniel Benavides, the lead vampire on the afore-drooled-about ballet) - the whole crew is great at balancing lightness and information on LGBT issues and the time just flew by - listen for them on Saturdays at 3pm!

Finally on Friday night I made it to Slingapour's downtown for the Comedy Benefit for Kelly Fitzpatrick and I'm so glad I did. It was an excellent show - emcee Samuel Moore did an excellent job lining up a lot of local talent to honor Kelly. She was always such a joy to see and so supportive of the CF community - she's terribly missed and I'm glad I got to be there to be part of celebrating her memory.

I was so happy to get to make some time this weekend to enjoy what was on offer in CF - and there's jus going to be more and more where that came from. I'm looking forward to it and I'll see you out there!

SexCult: When is a sex addict not a sex addict?

   As an watcher of all things Dr. Drew, of course I saw the bulk of "Celebrity Sex Rehab," when it was on two years ago. I laughed, I cried, I learned...it was like the Waltons only with a lot of references to masturbation.
   So I was shocked, shocked I tellsya, to see that Phil Varone, who was a patient on the show, was recently modeling for Playgirl, and for a sex toy, and lots of other things you'd think someone who seemed to work pretty hard at sex rehab ought not to be doing. So, is he a sex addict or isn't it? What is a sex addict, anyway? Can you tell when you're enjoying something versus when you're using it to numb you out? What's the difference between an addiction and a lucrative hobby?
   Those are some of the questions I looked at in SexCult this week - SexCult: Is he a sex addict or isn't he?...I could have gone on forever (ask my editor) so maybe I'm addicted to my job....at any rate, I hope you enjoy this as much as I enjoyed working on it!

A few weeks ago Gerard Depardieu peed in public on an aircraft and made me the happiest person on my block because it kept Gerard Depardieu in the news for a long time. I don't get to see him in movies often enough and there's something about him...animal magnetism, maybe, or just a feeling of undiluted masculinity, but whatever it is, Gerard Depardieu, to me, is about the sexiest celebrity the celebrity industry has offered up in quite some time.

And I know he's a little atypical as far as that kind of thing goes...he's old enough to remember when turntables weren't just for DJs, he doesn't look like he gives a damn about the gym, he is in a particular elite (an Oscar nominee, fergodssake) but doesn't seem to be of it. Anyway, ruminating about why one person strikes us as so viscerally sexy at a particular time and what other non-People's-25-Sexiest celebs were on other people's dreamboat list are the subject of this week's in SexCult: J'laime in SeXis magazine.

Catching up with Sex Feed....and my stolen (and recovered) car

SO, it's been a couple of weeks since I've been home from Canada. I wasn't re-acclimating toFlorida all that well to tell you the truth. I had really missed my friends and so I felt like Ed Grimley at Christmas when I got to see them (plus it's always good to give people a chance to miss you), but I was still on Pacific time, missing the very bearable lightness of travel, the beauty of Canada, the wonderful company and still had that buzz you get from a change of scene. Then my car got stolen.
And I knew I was home.
The spiffy thing is that the Orlando Police Department found it two days later, unharmed, in a parking lot not two miles away from my house. Evidently the thieves, realizing it had no gas and no A/C and they had stolen from someone more poor than themselves just ditched it. My friend Rich Torres in Brooklyn swears Casey Anthony "borrowed" it which is actually kind of a scary thought. Chas says if it had happened in Canada it would have been returned to the spot it had been taken from, full of gas and totally repaired with a note reading "Sore-eee!" This was the next best thing, so cheers to the OPD.

SexCult: My (Ex) Sex Hair

All humans have an intimate relationship with their hair, whether they know it or not. We've used it to signal rank, we shave it to demean prisoners and how we wear it reveals a great deal about us. The tightly contained librarian's bun, fuschia freak streaks, dreadlocks buzz cuts and comb-overs, we read things into people and allow them to read into us by our coiffs.
All I'd ever wanted was sex hair. In childhood I was smitten by every uber-coiffed bombshell in the media from Dean Martin's Golddiggers to Raquel Welch to Barbarella to Donna Summer to Cher to Jaclyn Smith (not so much Farrah, oddly enough...her blonde athleticism was too alien to covet). I was too young for sequined halter tops or anything to put in them, but hair was a short-term goal that seemed achievable.

Who, in the name of all that is holy, would not want to look like this?

Despite my mom's occasional success at talking me into then-stylish pixie-type cuts (The Short Con as I think of it now) I mostly did have long hair.
Until one day...a day that involved a little too much bourbon and a little too much bleach, a day that lead to a 20 year obsession with all things follicular.
That's this week's SexCult: My (Ex) Sex Hair, how image and identity come to mingle in our minds and how very suddenly we find ourselves able to toss an identity out the door, like a Christmas tree that should have been curbed before summer arrived.
My sex hair is gone now but I still love it on all the other ladies and still covet it, just a little bit, when I see a seriously good mane out there in the world. If you have it, toss it around for me, wouldja? Just so it tickles your back a little...

Why I'm Here: cuz God is a Scottish Drag Queen

If you’re going to go up into a place called the Cariboo Mountains, the very last thing you’d probably expect to find is a bunch of actors. The very idea is uncomfortably close to a scene in a Douglas Adams book, or a Monty Python sketch. Mountains, moose and … musicals?

But in Wells, deep in the interior of British Columbia, this actually makes sense -- because not far away from this sweet little town is Barkerville, a “living museum”-type historic gold rush town where you can see how people lived in 1870. For this, you need scads of actors -- so while Wells doesn’t have a grocery store, a liquor store or regular hours of any kind, it’s up to its armpits in thespians AND it has it’s own playhouse, The Sunset Theater, which brings us, sort of, to what the heck I’m doing here.

Why would an indoorsy girl like myself trudge into a place where you might encounter moose or bears? A place where, when you hold your cell phone to your ear expecting service, you just hear the laughter of fate on the other end? I’m here because my friend Chas produced a show at the Victoria Fringe Festival called “God is a Scottish Drag Queen,” starring Toronto comic / actor Mike Delamont in the title role (which is the only role). Even before winning an award for Best Solo Show at the Fringe, they were invited to bring the show to Wells. So I’m here because of a man in a dress.

In other words, my life never really changes.

I’ve long contended that Canadians are the funniest people in the world (SCTV, Kids in the Hall, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers) and Mike Delamont adds fuel to that notion by the drum-full. The drag in this case isn’t drag in the attempting-to-convince kind of even way, or the RuPaul’s Drag Race kinda way ... he’s basically a man in a dress, or, more accurately, a 6’7” man in an 80’s woman’s power suit, black bob wig and thick-as-haggis Scottish accent, answering some of your deepest questions about religion, back hair and the meaning of life with pants-wettingly funny observational humor and nuances you will remember for weeks. If you ever see this show, I promise, you will suddenly find yourself laughing like a crazy person in the middle of the street when you see someone on an iPhone but only you will know why.

This God loves monkeys, wants your dancing to improve and has very definite ideas about our place on the evolutionary food chain. Finally. A deity I can believe in.

So my great hope is that Mike and Chas will bring ‘God’ to Orlando next year, possibly for our beloved and long-running Fringe? How awesome would it be to see a double bill of “God is a Scottish Drag Queen,” alongside another (fingers crossed) Jeff Jones “Welcome to Hell” installment?

We kept seeing signs for "cariboo" and I thought, oh, that's cute, it's like a little regional inside joke, a play in the spelling of the kind of animals we might see here, caribou, moose, deer...all of which we were warned might decide to play "Frogger" with us, especially on the last leg of the trip.

Nope! We are actually in Cariboo, which is an independent regional district in the BC interior and about as beautiful a place as you can imagine. I horked this map and photo from the website of the Hubs Motel in Wells, BC, the comfy little inn where we are staying. Hubs has a fine fish and chips stand in front of it (also run by the owners, who cannot have been nicer to us), so Chas has declared this is heaven.
After being confined to the car for so long yesterday I'm anxious to get out and see where Chas, Mike and I we traveled to, so more info on all this tomorrow.

In the meantime I'm still on the job, so I wanted to catch up on some of the pieces I've written for MyPleasure in recent weeks but haven't had a chance to post. We had a bizarre robbery and an interesting news angle on it in Sex toy thief a pervert?....at least one answer to the age old question of whether bigger is better in Size doesn't matter....a wonderful chat with the acclaimed sex writer Susan Crain Bakos who told us all about The Orgasm Loop...and the encouraging story (for someone my age, at least) about Helen Mirren's latest achievment: Body of the Year: Helen Mirren.

Freddie Mercury would have turned 65 today. I know a lot of people will write about him more eloquently than I can; I'm just hugely grateful to have found so much inspiration, joy, connection, magic and comfort from the same person - and group of people working together - for most of my life and on into the future.

I'm still working on Sex Feed while I'm away and today I had New info study in which 1300 Guatemalans were infected with STDs and Chaz Bono to be on Dancing with the Stars. Never watched the show but since he'll be on it, I'll get on it.

Speaking of Chazes we love I'm writing my stories across from Chas Martin who is writing his stories, so it's 1984 at the Valencia paper all over again. Chas is not only one of my most beloved friends, he's also interviewed in Crazy Little Thing: Why Love and Sex Drive Us Mad. I've been quoting Chas for years; finally I formalized it and put his warmth and brilliance, at least some of it, in print.

I'm staying with Chas and his wife Heather in Victoria, BC Canada, for an extended, refreshing break and can't think of the last time I said "I"m soooooo happy," this many times in a day. The weather is perfect (sunny and between 55-75 degrees F every day), the company stellar, the beer and food have been so good I've often become mute with pleasure (the fish & chips Fairfield's today were especially worth shutting up for) and there seem to be at least 200 or so flowers everywhere I look. Today we went to Craigdorrach Castle, built by Vancouver coal magnate Robert Dunsmuir between 1887-1890 and a more bewitching example of Victorian living (the period and the city) I can't imagine. Tons of photos...here are a few highlights.

For someplace as David Lynchian as Craigdarroch (as Chas points out, he must make a movie here) there aren't, from what I understand, many tales of hauntings there. And yet here we have a headless maid serving lunch. In order to present the idea of people and servants, and to present the clothing they wore, the proprietors have made the interesting decision to use mannequins, most of which are headless, but those with heads are always facing away from the viewer, giving you a seriously Norman-Bates'-mom sense of the creeps.

Amy Winehouse's life and lyrics shimmered with the glories and agonies of love and she once said she drank because she was in love and botched her relationship. How many of us cover up romantic problems with other chemicals and then never learn to cope with the love stuff very well?
This week in Sexcult: Self-Medication in SeXis magazine I looked at love as a gateway drug and got to interview Dr. John Sharp of Dr. Drew's Celebrity Rehab, Dr. Joseph Shrand of the CASTLE Adolescent Rehabiliration Unit at the High Point Treatment Center in Brockton, MA and cultural anthropologist Dr. Helen Fisher.

Brian Alexander, author of America Unzipped: In Search of Sex and Satisfaction who was nice enough to give me a quote for the piece, said that "on the more general idea that some people are predisposed to "addictive" (I prefer brain-rewarding) stimulations and resulting behavior, I do believe this is true and I do bleieve it accounts for why some people have ultra intense serial love affairs that peter out and why some of these same people may turn to other activities or substances taht can provide similar stimulation like cocaine, booze, public performance, body modification and so on. It's also possible that one is not always, or necessarily born with this predisposition genetically speaking but that it can be acquired through experience."

Since I started looking more deeply into why we do what we do in my upcoming book Crazy Little Thing: How Sex and Love Drive Us Mad, the subject has fascinated me. And as someone who is as artful at avoidance as an octopus, I wonder how it effects us to hide rather than confront. Is it always bad?

Fabulous news - there is some sense and sanity left in Washington as evidence by the Department of Health and Human Services decides that they're going to accept the recommendation of the Institute of Medicine and decide that contraception and certain other other preventive health care should be available to women with no co-pays. You know I was worried about this issue - promoting pregnancy prevention is an important thing and not because it's a pretty alliteration, but because nearly half of U.S. pregnancies are unintended. Half! So I was concerned this would get derailed by the crazy train. I'm encouraged for both the mental and physical health of the country that it went through.

On an entirely different and repellent note we have audio tapes of Warren Jeffs instructing young girls how to please him sexually played in court and FDA warnings about a counterfeit morning-after pill.

How I Waited For Four Hours Not To See The Casey Anthony Trial

I wrote Crazy Little Thing: Why Love and Sex Drive Us Mad partly because I'm endlessly intrigued by what keeps some people away from the edge while others go over it. Craziness, it's triggers and components, can always be closer than we think...not sweet, endearing "Your so crazy!" crazy but lost it, out-to-lunch, Screw-Loose-LaTrek, dropped neuro-stitch crazy, the kind where people are often just functional enough to keep up appearances...until one day something goes horribly, horribly wrong.

The Casey Anthony murder trial is not about a crime of passion, but it is a pu pu platter of crazy - everyone connected to it either started out crazy or could sadly be driven mad by its Sophoclean weight- and since it's going on so close to my house I thought I'd try to get in. The anarchic nighttime line for tickets had scared me (crazy) so I was glad when things changed to include a daily announcement of ticket availability (with 50 tickets usually available). I saw one at around 11 a.m. Friday and was there by noon.

Guess what? We were told we'd have to wait until 4 pm. So there's still a line - it's just happening in the day time when it's 2439 degrees outside. Every workplace has a Tracy Flick that is just dying to be given a clipboard and told to take names... why not utilize them early on? No one knew.

The lady behind me - who had helped search for Caylee - did a head count and found we were numbers 47 and 48. Huzzah, right? But the line meandered. People came and went. Bathroom and parking meter needs beckoned. You could probably do a head count every 15 minutes and get a different number each time.

The tedium was mitigated by chatting with fellow my hostages and the chance celebrity encounters. Applause broke out for Geraldo and that was fun but my big squee moments were when Jane Velez-Mitchell and Aphrodite Jones, passed by (I'm an avid watcher of both). The officers on line duty were pleasant which made things feel better. It's like a flight delay. It sucks less if you feel like the crew is in your corner. More head counts were by the officers and I was still in the game. And then at about 3:45 the news came.

An officer came out and declared the line of demarcation....three people ahead of me. I was out. A lot of people who thought they were in were out. We were too soggy and surprised to talk. Had people cut in line? Had all those counts been wrong? Most people waited to see if it was a mistake but one cop who I hadn't seen before started loudly telling people to go. It was that "You've been told to leave," authoritah voice that always reminds me of Chet from Weird Science. It was more dispiriting than not getting in.

I figured I'd watch it on TV the next day...on a softer chair than I'd have had in court but through a haze of bitterness. Then.. there were no next-day proceedings. Judge Perry had declared a recess almost before it began. Ha! Schadenfreude. Had I been teased only to still not get in I'd have been seriously ticked instead of mildly irked.

It just goes to show when bad thigns happen don't go crazy. They might not be bad at all.

Sex Feed: How to Stay Safe from Your Own Shoes & Why CA's Huge Increase in Same-Sex Households

1) a Bloomberg story on some reasons same-sex households increased at 6x the rate as straight-lead households - one of which is really quite morale boosting,

and

2) how to avoid getting hurt by your stupidly high heels. Having a wicked fetish for the footwear equilvalent of the 'bad boy' I needed this.

My colleage Rayne Millaray's also did a wonderful piece on a Tampa clergyman who has the glorious nerve to talk about sexual health and safety from the pulpit: "Before we can save the soul, we have to save the life." Now THAT is inspirational.

Sex Feed: Indiana Planned Parenthood Shut Down & Japanese "Bagelheads"

Today's Sex Feed: Planned Parenthood Indiana closed 27 facilities temporarily due to slashed funding (a blow to the poor, women's health AND two jobs lost! I guess that's right wing victory).

Also a bizarre body modification out of Japan wherein you get your forehead filled with saline to produce bulbous knobs. The wearers are called :Bagelheads (though I think of them as Salt Water Daffy)

I've written a lot of disgusting stories but rarely do I get as nauseated as I did by that one.

I mean, of course, the one about Planned Parenthood having to close.

Wheeeeeeeeee! I got a new gig!
I'm very excited to be a new contributor to one of my favorite facets of SeXis Magazine magazine, SEX FEED, a news feed of sex-related stories in entertainment, health, politics and everything else. My first pieces are up up up already and include the story of a 51 year-old actor who just married a 16 year-old singer and a study on whether women are catching up to men in having affairs.
