What's Hot in CF

Yep, I'm late in writing this post - extremely so and my apologies for that! - but hopefully you saw the posts on Facebook and Twitter for the broadcast and so didn't miss it! I'm afraid it was the last weekend for Orpheus and Eurydice at UCF but check out their website for some of the great shows they have coming up AND you can still check out at least two of the events from What's Hot in CF on 90.7 FM including Charlie Bethel's one-man show of The Odyssey at Orlando Shakespeare Theatre and The Bach Festival of Central Florida. While Titans in C was a one-time event there is another show on March 16, The Academy of St. Martin in the Field will be here playing Haydn and Bach at the Trinity Prep School Performing Arts Center.
There isn't anything quite like classical music performed live - seeing Titans in C last night, which included works of Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, conducted by the festival's musical director Dr. John Sinclair, was thrillingly beautiful, especially in the old world setting of Rollins' Knowles Chapel. The complexity and enormity of the music is at times overwhelming and the idea of putting such a piece together, layer upon layer, of instruments, of choir voices of soloists - it's a magical feat to someone who can just carry a tune, let alone write one (and, my friend Hilary reminds me, Beethoven was deaf).
Live classical music is, I think, often back-burnered as maybe because it's not as widely available as other kinds of music, maybe because it's often more costly. It's too bad because it's such an encompassing and inspiring experience and hopefully one you'll read this and remember to take in if you get a chance. The Bach Festival is one of those unique features of our Central Florida arts scene and if you get any opportunity, even if it's the free Christmas concert in Winter Park every year, you should absolutely go; you'll be totally immersed in sounds which, in some cases, were meant to glorify God but certainly make us stand in awe of music itself.
