What Pope Francis has in common with Bill & Ted

Yes, I got the warm fuzzies today upon reading that Pope Francis called for a sort of detante with atheists/non-believers. It’s the good things we all do that matter, he said, and that that is the common ground on which we should meet.
That’s pretty spiffy - but does it strike anyone else as kind of sad that it’s such a huge deal for a spiritual leader to have said something that was simply mature? That many of us expect religious leaders to be either so crazy or so backward  that when one says something that’s wise, empathetic and good for everyone, that it’s big news?
But I don’t want to detract from the warmth of the statement.  From what I can see what Francis is advocating here is pretty much what Bill & Ted said in 1989: all that matters is that we be excellent to each other. Who can argue with that?
