Spiders in the House with Original Artwork by Dave Mitchell



My NatGeo Column Weird Animal Question of the Week today delves into the mystery of, What Should You Do If There's A Spider In The House? It's one of my favorites, not just because the reader who wrote to our news desk had been freaked out about a spider in her house, trapped it and took it to the police but because I got to talk to two of my favorite scientists, Christopher Buddle and Jo-Anne Sewlal who study spiders and are always ready to make them seem a little less scary to the rest of us.

All this rich, tasty goodness seemed to merit something special, so welcome to the first edition of my blog to have original artwork! I've wanted to do this for a long time and who better than Dave Mitchell, aka Cartoon Dave. Dave is a fine artist, cartoonist and author of the strip Barefoot and Pregnant. He's is also a Florida native, so he knows him some spiders! I'm proud to him illustrate the one of the eight-legged travelers I got to write about this week. Hopefully there will be many more cool things to come!

Say Ahhhhh: Drive-Thru Pap Smears in the COVID era

        Listening to my friends talk about the COVID-19 test I thought it was going to feel like getting a lobotomy.      “They stick a swab so far up your nose, I felt like it was going into the back of my eye,” one said, but when free drive-through testing was offered in my little Florida beach town I went. I can pinch a penny until Lincoln starts crying and if something is free, I’m going to get one, even if it means being skewered like a corn dog.  The test was mildly irritating. You tilt your head back and they do, indeed, poke a swab up your snoot farther than you’d expect it to go. It felt like I’d been bike riding and got ladybug stuck up my nose, a sensation which lasted about 45 minutes after the actual sticking.
