What's Hot in CF: Halloween & Candye TONIGHT!

Image
Listen for me TODAY on   WMFE's 90.7 FM for What's Hot in Central Florida at 4:32 pm - this is Halloween weekend and of course there's a kerjillion things to do including A Petrified Forest, a spooky scare trail in Altamonte Springs, the RDV Sportsplex's Spooky Skate and the best of Halloween Candye, Candye Kane , an awesome  blues singer (who did a super-sweet blurb for my very first book, Pop Tart ) who I've just found out form her website, is also a cancer survivor. Candye's reaching-the-rafters voice and smart, funny, touching, self-penned songs are as rich and satisfying as as a dessert-heavy champagne brunch and will leave you just as contented and smiley. Candye will be at McWell's on Orange Avenue TONIGHT, an excellent way to start this most excellent of holiday weeks. Speaking of, the final Saturday for my play "The Queen and I," is tomorrow night and your theatre wristband gets you into the Parliament House's costume contest

Best review ever

We're down to the last Saturday night of "The Queen & I," and I hate to see it end. It's been incredible watching the cast & crew ace it every week to standing ovations, getting great media coverage, including The Orlando Weekly  and  The Orlando Sentinel ...a nd then there was this heavenly capsule review in the form of a Facebook comment by Darcel Stevens (right), the golden-voiced emcee of the Parliament House Footlight Players . Here's what Darcel had to say about this comedy wherein the Wicked Queen finds a temp in her mirror-mirror-on-the-wall   "Let me tell u bitches something, I saw this play and what did I think? FUNNY AS FUCK!! If u don't laugh your ass off, I give u your f**king $$ back! It's brilliantly written, hysterically funny, and the acting; off the MFing chain! A must C!!! Love u all, but I've gotta go... -MsDarcel:-)" With THAT in mind click here for tickets!!! Thank you, Darcel.  That made my

What's Hot in Central Florida: Pumpkins, Pies & Plays

This weekend what's hot in Central Florida mostly feels like Central Florida: with temps climbing up to 90 today, according to weather.com at least, getting into the autumnal spirit is as difficult as getting in a romantic mood with Loony Tunes music playing in the background. Thank goodness the Mennello Museum of American Art will be hosting "Pumpkins & Pies," on Saturday the name alone seeming capable of making the temperature plummet a few degrees and putting one in a fall mood. The Orlando Ballet also resurrects The Vampires' Ball, a gorgeous series of vignettes about monster culture which will not only get you in a Halloween vibe but make you want to stay in artistic director Robert Hill's beautiful vision. And in a nod to the non-holiday vibe of the weather a non-holiday-related event - yes, I acknowledge there are a few of those going on - the legendary ska band The Toasters will be here at the Social on Sunday . What's Hot in CF: Myths, Legends and "The Queen and I"

Image
This week's "What's Hot in Central Florida" on WMFE 90.7 FM is all about myths and legends....the most legendary film EVER comes to the Orlando Science Center with "Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination,"  including THE REAL PROPS AND DROIDS FROM THE MOVIE, mot replicas, myths will be busted when Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman of Mythbusters  come to the UCF arena TONIGHT and the Winter Park Autumn Art Festival opens this weekend with lots of wonderful artists and musicians including "swamp funk" song stylist Beth McKee . And....fingers crossed....it should be a beautiful weekend for all of it! My play The Queen and I has gotten some excellent reviews and write-ups including kind words from Matt Palm of the Orlando Sentinel  and  Salo Steinvortz at the Orlando Weekly  and there are three more performances left - every Saturday in October! It's a comedy about the Wicked Queen (Snow White's stepmom) and what happens when she lo

What's Hot in CF: Happy Anniversary to Me!

Everyone I know has too little time and even less money these days - it gives life a lot of ragged edges. No one ever feels done. Everyone’s back burners are overburdened. Nothing ever feels like it’s come full circle.  But I was lucky this week - I got to see more than one thing come around to where it’s supposed to be. When I went to put together my segment What’s Hot in Central Florida on WMFE 90.7 FM I realized it was Pride Week: that was the first event I ever covered for the station last year, so happy anniversary to me! This week I talked about Come Out With Pride ’s Pride Parade, Ivanhoe Village ’s Pumpkinfest (I’m dying for one of their pumpkin martinis) and “The Queen and I” my very first play that opens at Parliament House’s Footlight Theater this week. So I’ve gone full circle at WMFE - and also from talking about the arts to being part of them.  Like like Gary and Wyatt probably didn’t seriously expect to bring a woman life in Weird Science , I don’t thi
