What Turns You On? Ten Facts About the Brain and Sex

Image
A little while ago I did a story on the brain and sex for Alternet thatblew up pretty well (look at the hits on Jezebel) so they asked me to do another that looks as if it's doing just as nicely....this one, though, is more specific. What Turns You On? Ten Ways Fascinating Facts About Sexual Attraction and how it works in your brain, i.e., is it prove-able that women are turned on by sports cars (yes) and if tampered with is there a part of your brain that will turn you into a wild-eyed sex maniac and possibly even a sex criminal (yes). Amazing, isn't it? How the thing that is supposed to make us smart just keeps on making us crazy instead?

You never know what's gonna blow up, do you? I made the cover of Jezebel!

You never know what's going to blow up, do you? I've written  lots  about love/lust and brain chemistry but this piece, published on Alternet seems to have gone around the world in a day and I'm happy to see that it made it to  Jezebel  one of my favorite online mags. Moreover, it made the  front page  as in, you typed in www.jezebel.com and my story would pop up first thing! You can still see it's 93,000 hits and counting! That's nuts!!! I took a screen shot of it! Anyway, here it is !  Enjoy!

What's Hot in CF: The Scottish Highland Games

Image
It's true there are many great things going on in Central Florida this weekend but one of my favorite events starts tomorrow so I devoted my whole broadcast to it - the Central Florida Scottish Highland Games. From the caber tossing to the livestock to the border collies to the clan tents I love the whole thing and never tire of it every year. You can hear all about it on the broadcast at 90.7 FM WMFE at 4:32 pm on Friday or click the link if you can't stand the wait and go check out all the events, bands and games at the Scottish American Society of Central Florida's website . Now put on your kilt and get out there!

It does what now? My 'brains on sex" story got into Salon!

Image
It might often seem like love/lust and your brain have nothing to do with each other: your brain is supposed to make you do smart things, after all, and love can make you do such dumb ones. Actually there are lots of parts of your brain involved in your sexual impulses and romantic choices, one of the things I talk about in  10 Ways the Brain Dictates Sex  which made it into Salon today. Yeay!

Liz on Alternet: "10 Interesting Facts About Your Brain on Sex"

Image
There is a cultural tendency to separate the mind and the body...even "mind/body" medicine / wellness / therapy has it as two words, as though your mind has a separate apartment on the other side of town from where your body lives. Your thoughts and impulses are generated from somewhere, specifically your brain which is part of your body, the part that runs things, even though it doesn't always seem to be in charge. Different parts of the brain have different agendas, especially when it comes to sex and relationships. Check out my Alternet story about "Ten Interesting Facts About Your Brain on Sex" and how you sometimes come to ask yourself "What was I thinking?"

Handle with Care: What's Hot in CF

Image
Some things are so fragile and What’s Hot in CF on 90.7 FM this week are things that need to be handled with care, like the spectacular art glass on display at the Orlando Museum of Art’s Contemporary Glass Sculpture Show, a samurai sword as in the classic film Rashomon showing at Enzian tomorrow and of course, the temperament of Joan Crawford. Joan Crawford’s House Party is a show I’ve been looking forward to for a long time we all have a chance for the next three Saturdays at the Footlights Theatre at Parliament House. The show stars comic soopah-stah Doug Bowser as Miss Crawford (face it: he’s Orlando’s own Maggie Smith), Mark Baratelli as Judy Garland, Ginger Minj (Joshua Eads-Brown) as Adele, Catherine Goodison as Christina and my couch as Joan’s couch. With a stellar cast like this it’s a can’t-miss so if you didn’t get to see this Fringe hit in 2012 don’t make the same mistake twice. Not with Joan in the house.  See you there!

My first piece on The Huffington Post!

Image
The age gap between Hugh Hefner and his young bride Crystal Harris is pretty impressive....but it's not a world's record. Check out my VERY FIRST BLOG for the Huffington Post, Hef's is Big....But Not the Biggest and learn about a couple of centenarians, including one wiley cougar in Malaysia, who actually outdid the publishing legend. I'm a big fan of Hef's....I was lucky to get to meet him once at the Playboy Mansion in L.A. He was charismatic, warm and quick to laugh and I was so star struck I had no idea what we chatted about for the few minutes we spoke. I've got great admiration for his vision, his perseverance and his influence on and engagement with the culture. Age, shmage. I hope he's happy. ANYWAY, I'm so happy to be on in the Huffington Post! Please click on the post, like it, share it, etcetera, but mostly enjoy it!
