Having demons pays off....

Image
I knew it! I knew having demons would pay off one day! :) My '7 Creatures Who Look Like Hell" on National Geographic  is blowing up - 15K Facebook likes and counting, and comments are coming in from the Netherlands, China, all over the world! So thrilled to see so many people loving these creatures. I am not alone in loving the ugly-beautiful! In the meantime, my latest post, Pictures: 5 Animals that Regrow Body Parts is doing nicely, too, a fascinating piece with some beautiful images, like this stunning blue star fish, and links to some more in-depth stories about these animals, how regeneration occurs and the scientists that are studying it. Working on my next couple of blog posts now and so, so happy people are enjoying them! Cheers!

The Greatest Regenerations....Animals that Regrow Their Limbs, Organs, Bodies

Image
We've all heard of animals that regenerate limbs and some scientists are studying how learning these animals' secrets might one day help us do the same. These are some animals they're learning from: Pictures: Animals that Regrow Body Parts on National Geographic . This is my third story for NatGeo and it's pretty well-acknowledged that a third date is a good sign. I still feel like popping the champagne for every story! So proud and so happy to get to learn more about our amazing universe every day.

Liz psyched for "Lizzie" and more on WMFE 90.7 FM

Image
When your name is Elizabeth and you go by "Lizzie" as a child there's no way around it: you're going to get called Lizzie Borden . I did and I'm sure it didn't effect me at all. I'm sure it played not part in my being spellbound by tales of murder and insanity like the ones I wrote about in  Crazy Little Thing: Why Love & Sex Drive Us Mad .  Nope. Didn't effect me at all. Anyway, between sharing her name, the TV movie with Elizabeth Montgomery and the sing-song rhyme that declared her an axe murderess ( Johnnie Cochran was right - those things stick) I've always been fascinated by stories of that particular Lizzie, so when I say I'm excited to see at Lizzie Borden - A New Musical at  Theatre Downtown I don't mean maybe. Between the subject matter, the fact that it was by Michael Wanzie and Rich Charron and features a host of local talent it's all the promise of Halloween a full three months early. If you want to continue th

Looking bad is looking good!

It's always thrilling when one's predilections pay off. There's a reason Tim Burton , vampires and steampunk are so popular - some people are jmesmerized by the creepy-beautiful. I am, so I was delighted to look at breath-takingly scary-but-riveting animals all week to write 7 Demonic Creatures , a blog post for National Geographic that I'm thrilled was still in their top News Watch posts late into the day and got more tweets than anything I've ever written. Wahoo! Link above Screen shot below! Champagne en route!

Basking shark photo by Alex Mustard.... go to the post for more awesome pics !  I feel so lucky to be writing for NatGeo - - I got to spend lots of time looking at the awesome pics of these creepy-beautiful animals and fell in love with each one, despite the fact that their mugs would give anyone nightmares.   Listen to this while you scroll through the pics and share the love....

Coochie coochie coochie! 7 Strange Vagina Facts / Liz on Alternet

Image
One is enough trouble....how does a lady born with two of them cope with it? And why do kangaroos need three? These and more curiosities about that most treasured and mysterious (well, kind of mysterious) of places, the vagina, in  7 Strange Facts About the Vagina  my latest story on Alternet.

My Extremophiles on NatGeo

Image
I'm still kind of beside myself that I've gotten to write for National Geographic - "Five Life Forms That Life on The Edge," my story about extremophiles is still holding it's own up there and with good reason: these amazing creatures that can survive freezing, radiation, high acidity, pressure, salinity and other crazily harsh environments are so out of this world they're helping us look out of this world for life in other places. Pretty spectacular. Anyway, click the link to check them out and in the meantime, here's the screen shot of the Tardigrade, the most resilient living thing on earth next to Joan Rivers.

Pink Planet!

Image
From National Geographic's Jane J. Lee:  Newly Discovered Exoplanet is on the light side .  Click the link to see the NASA illustration. It's farther away than you can even imagine and as surreally beautiful as you'd guess. It's also pink and doesn't weigh as much as it's regular planets....has anyone checked for the "Mattel" stamp on the side of it yet? It's clearly the Barbie Home World...and guess who's totally going!!! (No, it's not me).  (pics of Mars Explorer Barbie from Space.com ) Or else it could be....oh...my...god..... LIZ IN NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

Image
National Geographic is probably the most venerable magazine on the planet - been on it for 126 years, after all, and has made us all vicarious explorers with its stunning wildlife film and photos and iconic magazine covers. You see the yellow boarder and you know amazing things lie therein. I'm so excited to get to be a part of that tradition with my first post as a guest blogger for NatGeo with the story 5 Extreme Lifeforms that Live on the Edge , which is about extremophiles, animals that survive in excessively harsh environments (it's in the Weird & Wild section, where I feel very much at home) When I first read about them I was fascinated and luckily ended up getting to write about them. There's never a better day than when you jump out of bed because you can't wait to go do what you do (even that methane ice worm on the left is excited!). So go read it! I hope you'll love it, pass it on and walk away more impressed with all the Weird and Wild things i
